The Middle Ages was one of the eras when Montseny had a high population. The population fled from the plain and settled on the hillsides, away from the Saracen threat, and under the protection of the castles. It was during this time that the first towns grew up, consisting of a few farmhouses built around a church or hermitage. Romanesque style predominates in this area. There are modest constructions, harmonised with the mountain, a valuable heritage. Beside them other, more organised structures can be found, which correspond to the era when the plain was re-populated. The Monastery of Sant Salvador de Breda is the most representative building of this period.
